Differences Between doTERRA Deep Blue and Blue Tansy
Share
Two standout doTERRA products may help meet the need for natural relief and inflammation support: the Deep Blue® blend and Blue Tansy essential oil. The products do not have exactly the same effects, so we compare them for you. Blue Tansy oil is itself one of the ingredients in the Deep Blue blend. The aim of this article is to provide a science-based comparison, referring to official doTERRA sources and relevant scientific publications, based on the products’ mechanisms, composition, and areas of use.
1. Deep Blue® product family
Deep Blue® is a proprietary blend developed to help relieve muscle and joint discomfort. We offer it in several formats, including pure oil, roll-on, cream, and stick. Its main ingredients include:
- Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) also widely known by its English name Wintergreen – its methyl salicylate content contributes to its analgesic effect
- Peppermint (Mentha piperita) – its menthol content provides a cooling and anti-inflammatory effect
- Camphor – its borneol component has a muscle-relaxing effect
- Blue Tansy and Blue Chamomile – chamazulene provides anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
- Ylang Ylang, Helichrysum, Osmanthus – floral oils with skin-care and relaxing properties
The blend creates a cooling and warming sensation that acts through the skin and can also affect deeper tissues. The chamazulene component is responsible for the blend’s characteristic indigo-blue colour.

2. Blue Tansy essential oil
Blue Tansy (Tanacetum annuum) is a yellow-flowering Mediterranean plant whose oil is obtained by steam distillation. According to doTERRA’s own description , Blue Tansy essential oil, also known as Moroccan tansy, is described as emotionally uplifting. When applied topically, it soothes muscles and supports healthy-looking skin. Its main active constituents include:
- Chamazulene – anti-inflammatory, antioxidant
- Sabinene – helps reduce the appearance of skin imperfections; antimicrobial properties
- Myrcene – skin-supporting and soothing
Blue Tansy oil is highly pigmented, so using it undiluted is not recommended. It can be used aromatically and topically, particularly for skin care and relaxation.
3. Deep Blue Polyphenol Complex – internal support
The Deep Blue product family also includes the Polyphenol Complex, a capsule designed for internal use. Main ingredients include:
- Frankincense, Turmeric, Green Tea, Ginger, Pomegranate, Grapeseed – extracts rich in polyphenols
- Tummy Tamer Blend – a blend supporting digestive comfort (peppermint, ginger, caraway)
The product is intended to provide internal support for muscle and joint discomfort through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
4. Scientific research and publications
doTERRA is committed to scientific research. The company’s own research team has conducted several clinical studies involving its products. Scientific publications can be found in the following databases:
